W h a t o ur M e m b e r s a r e B uil d in g Roy Shannon and His $5,000 Airplane Yes, you can build and fly your own airplane inexpensively By Alan Norris, EAA 828597 I like to think the conversation back in 1997 went something like this… "$1,200 for a model! I don't think so!" "But this one I can fly in it after it's built." "Honey, I found a new airplane kit I want, but this one's a little different than the other radio-controlled kits I've built." "That's nice, Roy," wife Connie answered. "You do enjoy flying your model planes on the weekends. You said this kit is different? A different color? Maybe not as loud?" "This one is $1,200, but it comes with an engine." 26 Vol.2 N o.7 / July 2013 "That's nice, Roy. I know you…say what?!" Roy Shannon of Edgewater, Florida, had just started a new job at a Cadillac dealership and reported to his new boss, Steve Searle Jr. Upon entering Steve's office, Roy couldn't help but notice all the photos of various airplanes on the walls and commented on them, as he had been fascinated by airplanes from a very young age.
